Guitar Slide Sound Cutting Out? 3 Beginner Fixes

This lesson covers a fretting-hand slide: one finger stays on the string while moving to another fret so the pitches connect. A sound that disappears does not always need more pressure. The finger may lift, an overly tight grip may stop the hand moving, or the fingertip may miss the destination. Use string one from fret five to fret seven in standard tuning and connect the two notes with one pick attack.

मुख्य सुविधाएँ और विकल्प

  • Pick string one at fret five once, then move the same finger to fret seven without leaving the string
  • Keep enough contact for the sound to continue, but do not clamp the neck with the thumb and wrist
  • Land just behind the seventh-fret wire and check both the destination pitch and timing

Check both notes separately, then pick only once

After tuning, use the index finger to fret string one at frets five and seven separately. Pick each note normally and confirm that both sound clear. Place the fingertip inside each fret space, just behind the wire on the guitar-body side. Next, fret five, pick once, and move the same finger towards fret seven while the string is still vibrating. Keep the fingertip on the string and do not pick again at the destination in this exercise. TAB often writes an ascending slide as 5/7, but it may use s or another symbol, so the legend supplied with the music remains the final reference.

Keep contact without forcing the string down

If the fingertip leaves the string during the move, the fret-five note stops and fret seven becomes a separate new note. At the other extreme, clamping the neck can make the finger drag and can lock the thumb or wrist. Begin with the pressure that makes fret five sound clean, then release only the excess while keeping the string in contact with the frets. The thumb can travel lightly with the hand or reduce its contact during the shift; it does not need to grip one fixed spot. Choose a speed that keeps the shoulder down and the wrist free from a severe bend.

Make the landing accurate before making the slide fast

A connected sound can still finish on fret six, travel beyond fret seven, or land directly on the fret wire. First remove the beat and move from fret five to just behind the seventh-fret wire five times over the same distance. Then set 50 BPM, pick fret five on beat one, arrive at fret seven by beat two, and rest on beats three and four. After eight attempts with a distinct destination note, count “one and two and three and four and,” pick on a number, and arrive on the following “and.” Even as the move becomes shorter, keep the starting and destination pitches recognisable.

Pio: Should I press hard throughout the slide so the sound cannot stop?

Dock-sensei: Keep the string in contact, but do not force the grip. Release only the excess pressure and let the thumb travel lightly with the hand. A precise landing just behind the seventh-fret wire will make the destination clearer without a heavy squeeze.

Today's eight-minute slide session

  1. 1 minute: tune, then pick string one at frets five and seven separately three times each
  2. 2 minutes: without picking, keep the index fingertip on string one while moving 5–7–5, finding a thumb and wrist position that does not lock
  3. 2 minutes: pick fret five once and slide to fret seven; make five 5/7 attempts, rest, and repeat the set
  4. 3 minutes: at 50 BPM, pick on beat one and land at fret seven on beat two for eight attempts; if steady, pick on a number and arrive on the following “and”

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

What does 5/7 mean in TAB?

It commonly means an ascending slide from fret five to fret seven on the same string. Sources may use a slash, s, or another mark, so also check the TAB legend.

Should I pick again when I arrive at fret seven?

Not in this one-attack legato exercise. Pick fret five once and let the fretting-hand movement create the destination note. If a song or score marks another attack at fret seven, follow that instruction.

Must I slide with the index finger?

No. Musical context may call for the middle, ring, or little finger. The index finger on string one from fret five to seven is simply a clear starting exercise for observing the hand shift and landing point.

Should the thumb stay fixed on the neck?

A strongly fixed thumb can restrict the shift. Let it move lightly with the hand or reduce its contact when needed. Stop for sharp pain, numbness, or discomfort that remains in the thumb, wrist, or another joint.

Is sliding noise a mistake?

Some rubbing noise is normal and may be more noticeable on wound strings. Lifting the finger to remove every sound will also break the connected pitch. First shorten the travel, reduce excess pressure, and make the two intended notes clear.

Can I use the same exercise on an acoustic guitar?

Yes. The destination may seem quieter than on an amplified electric, but do not force equal volume by clamping harder. Use a short distance and aim to hear distinct starting and destination pitches.

Does a descending slide work the same way?

The basic contact and landing principles are the same. Keep the same finger on the string and stop just behind the target fret wire. TAB may show a descending slide as 7\5, but symbols vary, so check the supplied legend.

Is this the same as playing with a slide bar?

No. This article covers a fretting-hand finger slide. Bottleneck or slide-guitar technique uses a glass or metal bar and requires different pitch and muting control.
