Where Do Guitar Fret Numbers Start? 0, 1, and 2

A guitar fingerboard contains metal wires and the narrow spaces between them. When TAB asks for 0, 1, or 2, a new player may not know whether the number names a wire or a space. The metal line is a fret wire; the area commonly called the first fret lies between the nut and the first wire. Use the first four positions on the guitar to make the numbering and the correct contact point clear.

Fitur dan pilihan utama

  • Count the spaces from the nut at the headstock end
  • A 0 in standard guitar TAB means an open string with no fret held
  • Place the fingertip just behind the body-side wire of the target fret, not on top of it

Find fret 0, 1, and 2 from the nut

The narrow part between the headstock and fingerboard is the nut, which supports string height and spacing. In standard guitar TAB, 0 does not mean pressing the nut; it means sounding the string open with the fretting hand off it. The space between the nut and first metal wire is fret one. The next space, between the first and second wires, is fret two. Numbers refer to these playable areas rather than to the wires themselves. When lost, return to the headstock end and count the first space after the nut as 1, then 2 and 3.

Move the fingertip toward the body-side wire

For a note at fret one, press inside the first-fret space and close to its wire on the body side. Pressing directly on the wire can choke the string, while staying far back near the nut often demands extra force and can produce buzzing. Use the rounded tip rather than the nail and find the least pressure that lets only the chosen string ring clearly. Improving the position by a few millimetres is usually more useful than gripping the neck harder.

Use position markers and the semitone pattern

Dots on the fingerboard or its edge help you recognise your location quickly. Many guitars mark frets 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12, sometimes with a double marker at 12, but layouts vary by instrument. Count as well as looking at a dot until the neck feels familiar. Adjacent frets are one semitone apart: the open first string is E, fret one is F, fret two is F-sharp, and fret three is G. The same one-semitone rule applies to every string.

Pio: Does fret one mean I should put my finger on the first metal wire?

Dock-sensei: Use the space between the nut and the first wire. Inside that space, move close to the wire on the body side without sitting on top of it. The note will usually clear with less force.

An eight-minute fret check for today

  1. 2 minutes: point to the nut and fret wires, then say 0, 1, 2, and 3 aloud
  2. 2 minutes: sound the open first string, followed slowly by frets 1, 2, and 3
  3. 2 minutes: compare the middle of a fret space with the spot just behind its wire and listen for the clearer note
  4. 2 minutes: treat 0–1–2–3 as a short TAB line, repeat it four times, and locate every note from the nut

Pertanyaan umum

Does 0 in TAB mean that I press a zero fret?

No. In standard guitar TAB, 0 means play that string open without holding a fret. The horizontal TAB line tells you which string to sound.

Can I press directly on top of the fret wire?

That can choke or destabilise the note. Stay inside the target fret space and place the fingertip very close to, but not on, the wire toward the guitar body.

Do the dots on the fingerboard show note names?

They mainly mark positions. The note at one marked fret changes from string to string, so a dot does not carry one fixed note name.

How much higher is the next fret?

Moving one fret toward the body raises the pitch by one semitone. Moving twelve frets raises it by one octave.

What if the note still buzzes near the wire?

Curve the fingertip, move it just behind the wire, and use only enough pressure for one clear string. If many positions keep buzzing, check the string condition and instrument setup. Stop and rest if playing causes strong pain.
