What Should a Bass Beginner Practise? A Three-Month Roadmap

Bass supports both harmony and rhythm. Before chasing busy lines, learn to place one clean, even note in time and you will already be preparing to play with songs.

Month one: one clean note

Adjust the strap or chair and fret just behind the wire. For fingerstyle, rest the thumb lightly on a pickup or an unused thicker string and use the pickup area only as a starting reference while alternating index and middle fingers. It is not a required plucking location: moving towards the bridge usually gives a firmer sound, while moving towards the neck usually sounds rounder. Choose a position that keeps the wrist comfortable. With a pick, begin with small down-up strokes. In either style, touch unused strings lightly to stop extra noise.

Month two: roots on E and A

Gradually locate C, D, E, F, G, A, and B on the two thickest strings. One root at the start of each bar is already useful musical practice.

Month three: steady eighth notes

At 60 BPM, begin with four notes per bar and then try eight. Keep the eighth-note spacing even, and align selected attacks—such as beat one or other prominent points—with the kick drum. Not every eighth note needs to coincide with a kick.

Pio: Can I start without any guitar experience?

Dock-sensei: Yes. You do not need every chord shape. Connect the beat to one root note at a time and you will begin sounding like a bass player.

Perguntas frequentes

Should I start with fingers or a pick?

Choose the sound and motion you enjoy. Alternate index and middle fingers, or keep small down-up pick strokes.

Can I practise without an amplifier?

You can practise movement unplugged, but an amp or headphones reveal string noise and uneven volume. Check the amplified sound regularly at a safe level.
