Guitar Tuner Not Responding? Fix an Unsteady Reading
A moving tuner display does not automatically mean the tuner or guitar is broken. Check background sound, sympathetic string vibration, and how firmly you pluck before looking for a hardware problem.

Check what the tuner can hear
A microphone tuner may hear voices, a television, fans, and other strings resonating on the guitar. Make the room as quiet as practical, keep the device microphone uncovered, and place it near the instrument. Touch unused strings lightly so only the target string rings. If an unplugged electric guitar is too quiet, use a clean amplifier at low volume and switch off distortion or strong effects.
Change the pluck when the needle jumps
A very hard pluck can make the initial reading move. Pluck the string once at an ordinary level, wait briefly, and watch the sustained part of the note. Do not chase every movement by turning the machine head or repeatedly striking the string. A small movement near the centre is accurate enough for ordinary beginner practice.
Approach each note from below
Standard guitar tuning from the thick sixth string is E, A, D, G, B, E. If a string becomes sharper than the target, lower it slightly and then raise it gradually with small turns. After tuning all six strings, check them again from the sixth string. Tune at the start of every session and check again after fitting a capo.
Know when the guitar may need attention
Fresh strings can change pitch while they settle, so play briefly and retune. When open strings are correct but fretted notes remain noticeably wrong, excessive fretting pressure, capo placement, worn strings, or the instrument setup may be involved. If changing strings and using lighter pressure do not help, ask a qualified guitar shop rather than making an unfamiliar neck, nut, or bridge adjustment yourself.

- Minute 1: say the standard string order E-A-D-G-B-E

- Minute 3: pluck normally and read the sustained note
- Minute 4: lower any overshot string and approach the target from below
- Minute 5: recheck all six strings and listen to an Em or C chord
