Why Won't My Guitar Hammer-On Sound? 3 Beginner Fixes
A hammer-on begins with a picked note, then uses a fretting-hand finger to sound a higher fret on the same string without picking again. If the second note is weak, hitting as hard as possible is not the answer. First make sure frets five and seven sound clearly when picked separately, then build a short, accurate landing motion.
ฟังก์ชันและตัวเลือกหลัก
- Pick string one at fret five once, then land the ring finger quickly at fret seven
- Keep the index finger at fret five and land just behind the seventh-fret wire
- Before adding force, check the landing point and the speed of the fretting finger

Connect two notes on one string with one pick attack
After tuning, fret string one at fret five with the index finger and fret seven with the ring finger. Pick each note separately first and confirm that both sound clear. Next, keep the index finger at fret five, pick that note once, and land the ring finger at fret seven while the string is still vibrating. Do not pick the second note. TAB commonly writes this move as 5h7, although notation can vary, so use the legend supplied with the music as the final reference. Frets five to seven provide a comfortable place to see the movement without forcing a wide low-fret stretch.
Separate the cause into landing, speed, and the first note
A ring finger that lands in the middle of the fret space or too far toward the headstock needs more pressure to make a clear note. Aim just behind the seventh-fret wire, inside fret seven, and use the fingertip rather than a flat finger. You do not need a high wind-up; travel directly and quickly from close to the string. Keep the index finger holding fret five because lifting it early cuts off the first note. Avoid squeezing the whole neck while the two fingers perform separate jobs. If fret seven buzzes even when you pick it normally, correct that fretted note or check the instrument before blaming the hammer-on.
Make the spacing steady before matching the volume
The hammered note may initially sound a little quieter than the picked note. Do not force equal volume yet; listen first for a continuous fret-five note followed by a distinct fret-seven note. At 50 BPM, pick on beat one, hammer on beat two, and rest on beats three and four. This leaves enough time to inspect every repetition. After eight clear attempts, count “one and two and three and four and,” picking on a number and hammering on the following “and” to practise eighth-note timing. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or joint pain, and take a short rest.
Pio: The second note is quiet. Should I slam my finger down harder?
Dock-sensei: You do not need to force it. First check that you land just behind the seventh-fret wire with a quick, short motion. Keeping the index finger at fret five also helps the two notes stay connected.
Today's eight-minute hammer-on session
- 1 minute: tune, then pick string one at frets five and seven separately three times each
- 2 minutes: keep the index finger at fret five and slowly place the ring fingertip just behind the seventh-fret wire from close to the string
- 2 minutes: pick fret five once and hammer to fret seven; make five 5h7 attempts, rest, and repeat the set
- 3 minutes: at 50 BPM, pick on beat one, hammer on beat two, and rest on beats three and four for eight repetitions; if steady, place the two notes on a number and its following “and”

Last content review:
The fretting-hand articulation to a higher note on the same string was checked against the manufacturer's lesson, and a Japanese neck-reference typo was corrected.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย
Does a harder hammer-on always make a louder note?
More force alone can tense the hand and reduce accuracy. Aim just behind the fret wire and land quickly from close to the string, using only the force needed for a clear note.
Can I hammer on from an open string?
Yes. Pick the open string once and land a finger at a higher fret on the same string. This lesson uses frets five to seven so you can also practise keeping the first fretted note held.
Must I use the index and ring fingers for frets five to seven?
No. They are a useful starting pair for a two-fret gap. A phrase, hand position, or next note may call for the middle or little finger instead.
What is the difference between a hammer-on and a pull-off?
A hammer-on lands a finger at a higher fret to create the next note. A pull-off removes a fretting finger to reveal a lower fretted note or an open string on the same string.
What if fret seven buzzes when I pick it normally?
The issue may not be the hammer-on. Curve the fingertip, move just behind the fret wire, and use the least pressure that produces a clean note. If many positions buzz, check the strings and setup, and rest if playing hurts.
