Check the root and fifth
For a sixth-string-root shape, fret any sixth-string note with the index finger and place the ring finger two frets higher on string five. For example, G on string six, fret three, plus D on string five, fret five, makes G5. Play the two notes separately and say the lower root name.
Separate sixth- and fifth-string roots
For a fifth-string-root shape, place the index on string five and the ring finger two frets higher on string four. Do not sound string six. Alternate two sixth-string-root attempts with two fifth-string-root attempts, always beginning the stroke on the root string. The spacing looks similar, but the lowest required string changes.
Move the shape while muting unused strings
Travel one fret at a time without changing the two-fret spacing. Lightly touch an unused neighbouring string with the index fingertip or pad and reduce the picking range to two strings. After each move, check the root, the fifth, and the muted string. Move on after three attempts without an extra note.
