Ukulele Strumming Basics: Right-Hand Motion and Rhythm

Strumming is not forcefully scraping the strings. It is a relaxed hand passing them at an even speed. Mute the strings first so your attention can stay on rhythm. Your first target is not maximum volume; it is counting four beats while the hand travels without catching.

  • Keep the wrist loose and avoid digging into the strings
  • Begin with four even downstrokes
  • Keep moving through silent air strokes to preserve eighth notes

Pass the strings lightly

Rest the forearm gently on the body and let the whole hand make a small pendulum without locking the wrist. Use the end of the fingerboard as an initial contact area and let the side of the index finger brush the string surfaces. If the finger drops between strings it is probably too deep. Make eight downstrokes and eight upstrokes without stopping while you find a shallow contact that does not catch. Adjust the arm angle if the wrist or finger hurts.

Make quarter-note downstrokes even

Touch all four strings lightly with the fretting hand to remove pitch and set a metronome to 60 BPM. Strum down on one, two, three, and four, then relax as the hand returns to its starting height. The return is preparation for the next downstroke, not a sudden jump. Record eight bars and listen for a stroke that lands early, late, or much louder. After three consistent loops, repeat the motion on one C chord.

Keep moving through eighth notes

Move down on the numbers and up on each 'and', first for sixteen contacts on muted strings. Next, sound only the numbered downstrokes and let each upstroke travel silently above the strings. Finally, sound both directions. Moving only when a sound is required makes the spacing less reliable, so keep the pendulum going through every silent stroke. Eight uninterrupted bars at 60 BPM while counting aloud are a useful signal that you can add a simple chord progression.

Pio: My finger catches on the upstroke.

Dock-sensei: Use half the depth and bring the whole hand back up instead of hooking with the fingertip. A quiet, smooth stroke is the first goal.

Seven minutes for the strumming hand

  1. 1 minute: make sixteen even down-up motions without sounding the strings
  2. 2 minutes: play muted quarter-note downstrokes for eight bars at 60 BPM
  3. 2 minutes: move in eighth notes, sounding the downs and making silent upstrokes
  4. 2 minutes: record eight bars of down-up strokes on C and check for stops or sudden volume changes

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Can I strum with my thumb?

Yes for a soft sound and slow checks. Also try an index-finger method when practising continuous down-up motion.

Where should I add accents?

Keep all strokes even first. Then make beats two and four slightly stronger and listen to how the groove changes.

Must every stroke hit all four strings?

Use all four strings to check an even basic sweep, but music may call for a smaller range or a different colour. Stabilise the shallow motion first, then adjust the string range intentionally.

Why does my strumming hand stop during chord changes?

Separate muted right-hand practice from silent left-hand changes. When you combine them, hold each chord for four beats and use the upstroke after beat four as a silent motion if your fretting hand needs more travel time.
