C7 vs Cmaj7: Compare the Notes and Open Guitar Shapes
Do C7 and Cmaj7 look like two names for the same seventh chord? The key difference is B♭ versus B. Hear those two notes on their own, then use a familiar C shape to find them inside chords. The aim is to connect the symbol, finger position and sound—not to make fast changes.

1. Separate the symbols 7 and maj7
A C major chord contains C, E and G. Add the minor seventh B♭ for C7, also called C dominant seventh. Add the major seventh B for Cmaj7. Measured upward from C, B is eleven semitones away and B♭ is ten. The 7 is neither a finger number nor an instruction to play fret 7. In standard tuning, string 3 fret 3 gives B♭ and fret 4 on that same string gives B. Play them alternately first to hear the semitone difference. This single-note comparison is a listening exercise, separate from the chord shapes below.
2. Start from C: lift the index finger or add the little finger
Use standard EADGBE tuning with no capo. Form C with your ring finger on string 5 fret 3, middle finger on string 4 fret 2, and index finger on string 2 fret 1. Strings 3 and 1 are open. For Cmaj7, lift the index finger so open string 2 sounds B. For C7, return to C first, then add the little finger at string 3 fret 3 for B♭. Play strings 5 through 1 in all three shapes, avoiding string 6. After adding the little finger, pick each string separately to check that string 2 still rings. Do not force your hand to remain fixed; stop if there is pain. The diagram has string 1 at the top, note names inside the circles, and fret numbers above the grid.
3. Distinguish the full formula from the notes in a voicing
Read from string 6 to string 1: these shapes are C x32010, Cmaj7 x32000 and C7 x32310. An x means do not play that string; 0 means open. In the C7 shape, open-string G becomes B♭, giving C, E, B♭, C and E from low to high. It omits G, the fifth. That omission belongs to this voicing, not to the definition of C7. The Cmaj7 shape sounds C, E, G, B and E. Comparing these two shapes changes the arrangement and doubling of notes as well as the seventh, so use the opening single-note exercise to isolate B♭ versus B. Descriptions such as bright or settled depend partly on context. Hearing a difference here does not mean you can substitute Cmaj7 for every C7 in a song.

Dock-sensei: Right. The chord formulas differ at B and B♭, but guitar voicings can put those notes on different strings. Return to C between changes here so you can check which finger needs to lift or land.

- 2 minutes: after tuning, play B♭ at string 3 fret 3 and B at fret 4 separately. Listen for B♭ being one semitone lower
- 2 minutes: try C–Cmaj7–C. Pick string 2 alone to hear C–B–C, then check strings 5 through 1 individually
- 2 minutes: return to C, then add the little finger for C7. Hear G change to B♭ on string 3 and check strings 5 through 1. Release and rest between attempts
- 2 minutes: form Cmaj7 and C7 separately, strum lightly and say each name. Without looking at the diagram, answer “B or B♭?” and note the shape you still confuse

Frequently asked questions
Are Cmaj7, CM7 and Cm7 the same?
CM7 commonly means Cmaj7. Lowercase m in Cm7 means C minor seventh: C, E♭, G and B♭. Both its third and seventh differ from Cmaj7. Check the score’s symbol key if one is provided.
Can x32310 be C7 without a G?
Yes. This voicing omits the fifth while retaining the root C, major third E and minor seventh B♭. It does not mean you can freely remove any chord tone. Other C7 shapes include G.
Why is Cmaj7’s open second string muted?
First check that the index finger has left string 2. Then pick the strings separately to find any contact from a neighbouring finger. Adjust that contact before adding pressure.
Can I exchange C7 and Cmaj7 in a song?
